With the WNYC app, you have access to the most timely and talked-about local and national headlines from WNYC, NPR and other publishers.

WNYC is the flagship public radio station of New York City. We produce a range of original and innovative broadcast news, talk and culture programs including The Brian Lehrer Show, The Leonard Lopate Show and The Takeaway (a co-production with Public Radio International).

Our on-demand content includes award-winning shows from WNYC Studios, like Radiolab, the Peabody Award-winning show about curiosity and natural science; and Freakonomics Radio, the popular podcast that explores "the hidden side of everything."

WNYC Studios is the producer of other leading podcasts including 2 Dope Queens, On The Media, Death, Sex & Money, Note to Self, Radiolab Presents: More Perfect, Here’s The Thing with Alec Baldwin, Only Human and more.

The WNYC app also includes popular podcasts like This American Life, Money Talking, On Being, Fresh Air, and Ask Me Another.

Installing the app also gives you access to a range of additional WNYC live streams like The Jonathan Channel, our 24/7 broadcast dedicated to The Great American Songbook; and episodic live broadcasts of popular and independent musicians performing in the Soundcheck studio.

WNYC is a listener-supported public radio station. Your financial support helps make possible our programming, broadcasting and digital innovation. You can find our donation form in the app menu.

It’s great except when it’s not

Sometimes podcasts disappear. Sometimes they aren’t uploaded. Recently it’s that you can’t listen unless you have the app open on your screen. It’s like they turned on YouTube’s policy that you can’t minimize content and listen to it unless you pay. But here is the thing. I do pay. Why can’t I listen to the podcasts with my phone closed??? Just started today. Feedback page had no place to leave feedback so I’m leaving this mediocre review. Ironically a three star review still raises their ratings because it’s so low

Time for an update already!

Besides the antique layout, the inability to easily find out what’s on next, and sometimes overly complex navigation, the big problem at this point is the many problems the stream seems to have holding a connection. We’re in a period where it drops multiple times an hour, on wifi or cellular, and you know what happens when it has to rebuffer? Sure you do! You miss programming and worse, you have to hear the same promo (or two promos) you’ve been hearing for the last two weeks. It’s enough to make you give up and look for a podcast or something somewhere else… which I assume isn’t what you want?

Please stop playing so many ads

This app plays an ad every time your internet connection changes (so leaving/returning home, connecting/disconnecting to carrier wifi). This happens easily 5+ times within 30 minutes when I’m going out for a short walk and want to stream wnyc.

Not to mention that you have to listen to the on-air ads anyways.

It’s so bad I actually choose podcasts fairly often rather than listening to the same ad so many times. Please fix this so that the ad is limited to at most once per hour! Or even better, create a paid version that is ad-free. Thanks :)
